Because of its natural characteristics, the Mount Faron was the cradle of the human, animal and vegetable populations of the area. So the man naturally turned to this territory where all the resources needed for their development were present.

During the prehistoric ages, the caves and caverns of the Faron were attended by the men in search of the refuge or simple home, in particular for the shepherds. The prehistoric archaeological excavations of the Faron were carried out by Jean Layet in the first part of the XXth century. The oldest traces of civilizations are dated from the Neolithic era.

The presence of water

On the western slopes of the Mount Faron, the Saint Antoine spring, located 2km apart of Telo Martius was a sanctuary, probably devoted to the indigenous divinity Telo (in 1897, one went up about 150 Roman coins and a calcareous block of decorated with crude ovum).

Since the Neolithic era, the Mediterranean landscapes are not natural anymore : they are anthropized which means modified by the man with the appearance of the culture about 6000 years ago.
